A Day That Shocked the World: the assassination of John Lennon

31 years ago, on the evening of 8 December 1980 John Lennon was fatally wounded by four bullets fired by a mentally disturbed fan outside his apartment in New York . He was just 40 years old and the news shocked people the world over.

It was hard to believe that Lennon was dead. For many he was the portrait of a generation. With his music, political activism and poetry he influenced lives of millions of fans and left an immeasurable legacy.

Lennon is mostly remembered for being the founder of The Beatles, one of the most successful rock bands ever. He left the group in 1969 and dedicated his last ten years developing a solo career. That year he married the Japanese artist Yoko Ono and soon gained visibility as a political activist protesting especially against the Vietnam War.

When Lennon was shot he was living a life dedicated to his family away from the media spotlight. Even 30 years after his death the world still remembers how this English teenager from a deprived background conquered the world with his music and transformed the history of rock and roll.
