For the last two years, Europeana has sponsored a category in Wiki Loves Monuments – last year it was Art Nouveau architecture, this year it’s GLAM monuments. ‘GLAM’ is short for ‘Galleries, Libraries, Museums and Archives’, so pictures of the buildings and environments related to these kinds of heritage organisations.
The competition has now come to an end. With more than 350,000 submissions from more then 15,000 people in 33 countries it has been a huge success. The Europeana category itself had over 2,300 submissions. We shortlisted 48 photographs and asked our Facebook friends to vote for their favourites.
The winner is a stunning image of a cross at Bran Castle, Romania, taken by Libertina Grim, which is shown here along with a short story behind what inspired Libertina to shoot the image.
What inspired me to take a picture of this moment was the colour combination between the wonderfully lit cross and the frozen trees in the background, the intriguing opposition between the warm and cold colour tones. I need to mention that this was a very special trip for me, I had all the motivation to go and shoot some good pictures there. I had been looking forward to visiting the Bran castle for years. I finally managed to do that in late November last year, although it was freezing cold at the time. A decision I did not regret – in fact I want to go back there as soon as I have the chance. I just love the mysterious atmosphere and mood at Bran castle, it really stirs my imagination. I think it’s mostly because the word ‘castle’ brings to my mind a haunted medieval castle high up on a hill, with stone walls, defense towers and a dungeon… you get the point. I am just very much into anything gothic (probably because I’ve been reading too many gothic stories). Even if we do not take into account the whole ‘Dracula’ myth created around it, Bran castle is still quite an eerie place at times, especially when enveloped in frost and mist. A great place to visit and experience!

Along with Libertina’s winning photograph, the most popular images representing some of the best examples of GLAM monuments will feature in a special Europeana Virtual Exhibition. This exhibition will go live in March, and will feature the Wiki Loves Monuments photos as well as other related Europeana content.
We would like to thank everyone who entered and voted, and we invite you to browse all the shortlisted images on Facebook.
